What is TiE?
TiE is a global, not-for-profit network of entrepreneurs and professionals dedicated to the advancement of entrepreneurship. TiE provides a platform for mentoring, networking & education, to entrepreneurs & professionals. TiE is an open and inclusive organization that has rapidly grown to more than forty chapters in nine countries, with over 10,000 members.

What does TiE stand for?
TiE stands for "The Innovative Ecosystem". TiE endeavors to cultivate and nurture the ecosystems of entrepreneurship and free-market economies everywhere, as it sees this as the single most powerful instrument of prosperity.

What is TiE-DC?
TiE-DC is the Washington DC Chapter of TiE. The Washington DC Chapter of TiE is one of Washington's largest business networking organizations, dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
TiE-DC engages entrepreneurs and senior executives throughout the Mid-Atlantic region primarily through focused networking events and business conferences. We regularly host events that are open to entrepreneurs across the region, as well as exclusive events that are by invitation only.

 

How and when was TiE-DC started?
TiE-DC was founded by Reggie Aggarwal (CEO of Cvent) and Sanju Bansal (COO of Microstrategy) in 1997. In 2000, it agreed to merge with TiE because of their common foundation of entrepreneurship.

What is the mission and objective of TiE?
TiE's mission is to foster and advance entrepreneurship across the globe. Its principle objective is to provide a platform on which people with entrepreneurial spirit and those interested in economic value creation can come together to share ideas. TiE endeavors to cultivate and nurture the ecosystems of entrepreneurship and free-market economics everywhere, as it sees this to be the single most powerful instrument of prosperity.

TiE's Philosophical Framework is to:

  • Create an open, inclusive, and transparent organization
  • Provide positive leadership role models
  • Emphasize value-creation through informed entrepreneurship
  • Maintain high ethical standards
  • Display rigorous, intellectually honest behavior
  • Pursue a modern, scientific and forward looking approach
  • Remain socially responsible
  • Do not tolerate pettiness, divisiveness and corruption
  • Strive to remain an idea and value-driven organization

Does TiE have any religious or political objectives?
No! TiE does not engage in political or religious activities or any matters that may create divisiveness among people.

Is TiE a venture/investment organization?
No! TiE is not a venture/investments organization. However, TiE members, through their network relationships, often invest in companies with TiE affiliations. TiE also does not endorse any investments, even though companies are presented at TiE events. TiE has facilitated venture investment by providing a platform for entrepreneurs and VC funds to come together.

Is TiE engaged in any educational activities?
TiE institute conducts a number of workshops on both hard and soft skills. The faculty of TiE Institute comprises of leading industry practitioners who are well reputed and conduct sessions in their area of expertise.

Is TiE engaged in direct charitable activities?
TiE is not directly engaged in any charitable activities. However, various TiE affiliated individuals are involved with charitable organizations of their personal choice.TiE encourages all such efforts and takes pride in the initiatives of the members to give back to the communities at large.

TiE is engaged in charitable activities indirectly through the TiE Foundation. The TiE Foundation supports analysis, research and discussion of economic policies of different nations, with a major focus on South Asia. It is envisaged that the TiE Foundation will become a catalyst for enlightened policy changes and economic knowledge transfer, which will aid the cause of entrepreneurs worldwide.

The Foundation seeks tax-deductible contributions through events, direct solicitation, and similar means from individuals and institutions interested in advancing such policies efforts. For reference, during the previous four years, individual TiE Charter Members have supported this work at Stanford University under the TiE name. Also under the aegis of the TiE Foundation banner, TiE conducts an annual Golf tournament, the proceeds fo which are used for economic policy research.

The TiE Board of Trustees has concluded that this is a valuable effort, consistent with the mission of TiE, and must therefore be institutionalized.

What are TiE's accomplishments?
In addition to the impressive membership numbers in thousands, world wide, we believe we have a number of achievements to our credit. The TiE brand is synonymous with entrepreneurship globally and with high quality standards. By facilitating ideas to germinate into actual businesses, TiE has created wealth and helped boost the global economy. Individuals associated with TiE have created businesses with market value over $200 Billion, since 1992. With TiE's continued growth we are confident that this figure will continue to increase. Membership and attendance at TiE events continue to grow at over 20%, even during difficult economic conditions.

How is TiE helping the other regions of the world?
With a global outlook, TiE has established chapters in US, Canada, India, UK, Pakistan, Singapore, Dubai, Australia and Malaysia, the TiE movement has created a strong foothold in many parts of the world. In all these countries, TiE has brought together entrepreneurs, business people, government policy makers, professional service providers, academics, and the media with the objective of enhancing the entrepreneurial climate of the respective areas.TiE has also been instrumental in making positive changes in Governmental economic policies in some of the global emerging markets. Specifically TiE is credited to have influenced liberalization of key sectors including Telecom & Venture Capital investments, in India.

TiE's long-term goals...the future of TiE?
TiE aspires to continue the expansion of its chapters and membership worldwide, while maintaining a clear focus on its objectives and philosophies. TiE will therefore continue to encourage and support the efforts and spirit of entrepreneurship everywhere. TiE aims to continue its pivotal role in the formulation of sound ecosystems for regional and national economic growth through private enterprise.
